FLAM Program 2016
Over 6o workshops and nearly twenty "downtime" activities took place during our Utopian School day for FLAM 2016. Here's a look at what was offered. Workshops were lead by faculty, staff AND students as well as some experts from the community. Activities took place during an extended break time in the middle of the day where our school community came together to hang, create and chill.
FLAM Program 2014
FLAM, the contemporary arts and learning festival-slam, is pleased to present our first annual conference with a focus that includes incorporating the arts across multiple disciplines for K-12 learning. Our conference day will include four main educator workshop sessions with presentations, a roundtable discussion, resource sharing and lesson swaps as well as hands-on participatory activities with educators and student-artists.
Films @Flam will screen student and faculty-created films throughout the conference day that feature project-based learning and the arts. Educator sessions will be spread out throughout the day to allow time for attendees to interact with one another, attend student film screenings, and engage with LVCP's contemporary student-artists, performances, and exhibits during the festival.

Art 21 Resources: How to design Essential Question Driven Curriculum with Contemporary Art
Presented by Art 21 Educator Lovely Shanti Kelly
Contemporary artists are always challenging themselves to relate to the world we live in. As contemporary artists, we need to rethink the traditional paradigms of education and broaden our scope of what art-making is and can be in the contemporary world. Art 21 is the PBS, Peabody Award-winning biennial television series, "Art in the Twenty-First Century," a documentary series which has introduced millions of people to contemporary art and artists and has created a new paradigm for teaching and learning using big ideas and essential questions.
This workshop will introduce you to simple ways and resources in how to use the free web sources and videos available from Art 21 as well as their full videos. Also learn tips on how to translate contemporary and conceptual art into understandable and powerfully engaging lessons for K-12 students. Video clips and photos of student work both in process and final projects will be shared as well as navigating through the art21 web resources and Educator guides.

Beyond the Poster--Incorporating Art into Project Based Learning: A Roundtable Discussion
Facilitated by Emmy Spencer and LVCP Faculty
LVCP faculty members invite you to engage in a discussion covering the challenges and triumphs encountered while incorporating art and creativity into the cross-curricular projects LVCP is known for. Sharing best practices and bringing our questions to explore together, we will discuss how to best bring the arts into the classroom in ways that engage students in learning through arts practices that go beyond producing a simple aesthetic.

TASK in the Classroom & The Pedagogy of Play
Presented by Lovely Shanti Kelly and her Contemporary Art Students
Where, when and how do we give ourselves license to play? What does play give us and why is it so important in education? We will look at the benefits of play on our emotional, mental, physical, and developmental states, as well as discuss connections play makes in our learning and artistic endeavors. This workshop includes a brief presentation, time to participate, and concludes with a reflective discussion on the experience, where we will further explore cross-curricular connections to learning through this open-ended improvisational art and making activity. Educators will receive a copy of the curriculum from a recent LVCP project that focused on the essential question, “How does play help our lives?” which explored these themes with studio art students.

Films Screenings at FLAM
Films at FLAM showcases student-made films from LVCP, ranging from socially charged documentaries, to new twists on classic Shakespeare, to a quirky WWII tale that was filmed by students on an actual submarine in San Francisco Bay Harbor. These films showcase the incorporation of technology, art, and creativity in LVCP’s project based learning curriculum.
Boondoggle
Colin Dean and LVCP’s first ever Film Production class presents Boondoggle, a short film in which WWII Captain John Raymond approaches his submarine and finds that the Rosie the Riveters have not yet finished the final repairs. In a split second, Raymond is ordered to start his secret mission…trapping some of the Rosies and their Supervisor onboard. Will Captain Raymond and his crew finish their mission? Can the Rosies keep quiet in the midst of war?

Art Exhibits, Performances & Installations
Throughout FLAM, participants are invited to engage in interactive art performances with LVCP student-artists, and experience art improvisations and installations.
Students help fellow artist prepare his street art mural canvas for the participatory installation. The piece chosen is one that was a previously abandoned mural project by former students at LVCP repurposed here for this work.
